Only When We Are No Longer Afraid Do We Begin to Live.

- Butterfly Bursting Out of Cocoon-Janice Vancronknite

Courage

Courage stands by you in the loneliness of the desert

Armed with bravery and willing hope

She is the wind that follows you and blows you onto your feet to fight

In The Alchemist, Santiago plays the role of the hero in the book and a hero must always have courage to achieve great success.“It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.” Santiago goes out into the unpredictable world because he wants to find his true destiny and make something of his life. Also, Santiago does not have a fear of failing. He taught me that if he did not step out of our comfort zone, he would have never been able to have the courage to confront his father and tell him he did not want to be a priest but to travel instead, leave the easy going life of a shepherd, face obstacles and to finally succeed in finding our destiny. Without courage, life would be wasted away because we don't learn new things and go out and add adventure to our lives. When writing my poem, I was thinking of times when  I have used courage and what it felt like and also when Santiago confronts the alchemist for the first time and instead of running away, he stands proud. In my point of view courage is like a force that beams out of you when needed and never leaves you. You always have it inside you, but it is your choice to let it out or not and prevent fear from overtaking you. I believe courage is an amazing thing because we need courage to not lose our heart when we met with failures. Like Coelho said,  "Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience."
